I have a project where the special inspector flagged some welds because they were done with GMAW process. The welds are 3/16" vertical fillet welds. Is this procedure pre-qualified for this type of weld?

GMAW spray arc is a pre-qualified process per D1.1

However, that does not imply that the process may be used without a written WPS. All pre-qualified means is that no PQR is required, and therefore no mechanical testing.

You should review Section 3 of D1.1 to ensure all other prequalified requirements are met.

If your fillet welds were made in the vertical position, that means GMAW short circuiting arc was probably used, and that is NOT a pre-qualified process.
