Our company opted not to buy the step translator for Catia. When I import Iges files all I get is trimmed surfaces. any ideas on how to get solids into CatiaV5 R18?

Unfortunately, the only advice I could offer is to look into a 3rd party company who could make the data translation for you. A word of warning, though - I did the same thing with a project I was on 2 years ago, and the original NX data, after being STPed out and imported into Catia using the STP translator, still consisted of all surfaces - Catia could not close the surfaces, and therefore could not create a solid geometry. So, depending on the complexity of the NX data, getting solid geometry in Catia without a specialized healing module (more $$$) may not be possible (just my experience).

We used to have a step translator for Catia and that worked just fine, we just are forced to use iges now. maybe an intermediate program like Pro-E or solidworks can make a better iges file and actually return solids? I have those two programs and need to try on some files, unless someone else has already had some luck getting from NX to Catia without step somehow that they could share.
Or any luck using iges period to get solids?

FXjohn,
There is an option in Catia for this. I just tested with our data admin's NX seat.
Tools - Options - General - Compatibility - Iges. Join surfaces of the model. I also use advanced optimization - deform .001 Angle 2 with Topological reduction of boundaries.

Thank you Derek, I also found that step to Pro-E to Iges also works
