hi,
i have a generator with two sets of windings..one star and one delta. i have a plc that will switch between the windings. what is the best controller for this application? contactors? relays? starters?

thanks

joe

Hi uswt

Contactors are normally used for this application. The
PLC card outputs, will trigger a relay that in turn may energ/deenrg your contactors. This application will require that contactors probably should have a mechanical interlock to make sure that the 2 contactors are not energized simultaneously.
If the Generator is large, you might have to use control relays to operate the larger contactors.
PLC card Output relays contacts may be limited to inductive loads of 5 amps,10 amps or less amps.

Take care

hi,
thanks for the reply. where do we go from the two contactors? to a terminal strip and then daisy chain the two gen inputs to a single feeder?

thanks

joe

Suggestion: The generator may be seen as a motor from the star to delta and vice versa switching. The closed or open transition may materialize. Visit
for more info on the transitions and hardware required. The controls will be somewhat different since you are using the PLC, and motor starting phenomenon is not there.
