GEAR TRANSMISSION EFFICIENCY

Hello everybody!

While designing a transmisison system where multiple transmission stages are involved, a doubt has arisen.

As a general rule, given a power to be transmitted, is it better (in terms of gear transmission efficiency), to transmit it at low torque and high speed, or at low speed and high torque?

I would say that the first option is the best one, as high speeds create problems with the lubricant, which cause the efficiency to drop, but I am not sure at all, so I am asking what are your thoughts about it.

I thank you in advance for your attention and availability!!

It depends on the application - look for ones similar to the task you intend the system to perform and see what is the most often selected option. There is no "general rule" about which is better.

LolloPollo,

It depends on your application. A high torque, low speed motor is bigger and heavier than a high speed, low torque motor. High ratio gear reducers generally are less efficient than low ratio reducers.

Moderation is often best.
Endeavour to avoid extremes of torque or speed.
