I would like to build a planetary gear reduction. I have done some research on them and have figured out the number of teeth each gear needs and the number of planets. However, I do not know how to figure out the tooth profile to keep the gears from binding. Is this something that the gear manufacturer will figure out when I call and tell them what I want, or is this something I have to figure out. If I have to figure it out, how do I? I don't know where to start. Thanks.

Hello,
I think, that you don´t have to be worried about it. Evolvent shape is the most common and the cheapest to manufacture and also very easy in mounting the gears. The workshop probably has tools for the evolvent shape of tooth.

The gear manufacturer will ask some numbers.
The standard #.
Or if it is not standard
- Number of teeth
- Diametric Pitch or
- Module for metric involute profile
- Tooth thickness
- OD, Pitch and Root diameters
- Fillet root or flat root teeth
- Material hardness
