How on earth do you set up datum planes for a part with no holes or mounting details and only one small flat surface and one straight edge (neiter of which are really significant features)?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

I'd suggest looking into datum targets.

You may be better off posting in forum1103.

Strongly suggest that if you re-post there you state what standard you are working too. Also Red Flag this post for deletion.

Posting guidelines faq731-376 (probably not aimed specifically at you)
What is Engineering anyway: faq1088-1484
