Gap between simple span runway beams..

The following detail from AISC Design Guide 7 shows a gap between runway beams at support.

I can't find any reference to how to define or estimate that gap dimension.
In that gap, the rail will be unsupported.. is the size of the rail that defines that gap?

Generally only 10 or 12 mm. I don't think any rail size would have a problem spanning that gap.

Do you see any problem spanning a bigger gap? (50mm) for example.

Probably not. But I don't know why such a large gap would be used.

I think you might be getting confused with 2 separate items of splice in the runway beam and splice in the rail itself - these are 2 separate items and do not usually occur at the same location. The gap in the runway beam is nominal and is usually around 10mm. Any rail will be able to span over this small gap.

Is a bigger gap a shear problem for the rail? For example 45k for an ASCE 60 Rail.

This bigger gap make the runway container-transportable.
