Hello,

Does anybody have ideas of how I can instrument this furnace to get a confirmation that the lid is open to a PLC.
The lid lifts up & turns to the right it is acuated by a hydraulic cylinder.

The furnace can also tilt forward.

Looks like a good application for a proximity switch. A suitable target - e.g. a bolt head mounted on the orange sleeve connected to the cylinder rod - would allow you to monitor both rod extension and rotation. You will need to provide some physical protection for the sensor and its cable if the environment is a typical foundry. [wink]

Need more info. Do you need to know it's just open or open and the door swung out?

If swung out you can tag a bracket onto the box surrounding the hinge and use an inductive proximity sensor to detect the bolt that is visible on the side of the hinge.

If this is related to a safety critical automatic system, then perhaps the design process should include safety analysis and probably some redundant sensors. If it's just a lock-out or indicator in a manually operated process, then carry on.
