frost and forest roads

I'm a trainee civil with the forestry and I'm doing a report on frost on the forestry roads - I'm trying to find ways to tell when frost has left the forest roads. I have been told about a test that is similar to that of the dilatency test. I'd be grateful for any help and suggestions where I can do some further reading.
