A350-1000 ‘too small’ to top Airbus range: Emirates chief

Emirates Airline president Tim Clark has again expressed concern about how airlines will cope with rising demand in the future without recourse to new Airbus A380-sized jets, warning that ticket prices could eventually rise as a consequence of fewer seats being available into slot-constrained airports.

I find this a little "odd". the Airlines have spoken ... the A380 is too expensive for mass appeal. I think it's less about efficient passenger travel (cost per seat mile) and more about the total cost of the plane (tying up too much capital).

I think the notion of rising demand is the issue here, a return to the travel volumes seen 3 years ago seems unlikely this decade or possibly even ever.

I loved the A380, but that's in part because trans-Tasman a whole row of seats to ones self was typical.

pre COVID people were already dropping the 380.

I once flew out of Sydney on Australia Day (Jan 26th). In the main pax cabin of a 777 there were less than a dozen pax !! there were more attendants !

Pretty odd. I can't see intercontinental tourism ever getting back to pre covid levels, because of the futile greenhouse gas scare stories.

“How are you going to cope with global demand if you pick up at [2019 levels of growth] and extrapolate to 2030 at 4%?” he asks. “How are you going to cope with that with A320s and A350s?'

Because that's a stupid forecast. You've already lost 2 years of that growth, so you'd need 5% from now on to meet that. Emirates has stopped buying the 380, why would anybody develop a plane to replace it?

He’s not drunk. He wants an Airbus competitor to the 777-9, so Boeing doesn’t hose him on the price of those.

There might not be an engine available. It might not be weight or performance competitive.

gotta be more feasible than restarting the A380 line !? The airlines have spoken.
maybe it'd be another "bad" compromise, a la 737 Max ??

Maybe Airbus have more of the small jet market and Boeing the larger jets ?
