Foundation Wall Reinforcing

Checking over some drawings done by an architect. They have a foundation wall with #5@48o.c., which I dont see as doing anything. Would you just consider it plain concrete as designed? Interior slab on one side, outside grade on the other.

How do you folks handle this type of detailing?

That wouldn't meet spacing limits of rebar for flexural design. Per ACI 318-08 7.6.5: 7.6.5 — In walls and slabs other than concrete joist construction, primary flexural reinforcement shall not be spaced farther apart than three times the wall or slab thickness, nor farther apart than 18 in.

So yeah, consider it as plain concrete. That reinforcement is just decoration. It doesn't do anything for flexure or crack control.

Spacing is greater than that for temperature steel in many jurisdictions.

In our environs where frost penetration is 6', that detail would likely fail.

Yup, definitely based on the IRC.

Thanks everyone. Its a small commercial building, It checks un reinforced. I have had bigger houses than this with less reinforcing.
