formula display - excel

this may sound like a newbie question.... please excuse.
I have been using excel for over 10 years. I use it in conjuction with Autocad Inventor in the creation of iparts. Lately, we switched over from NT to XP and with that a new version of excel.
Can someone please tell me how to see the result of a formula. You used to be able to type in the formula in the formula bar and the result showed in the current cell. I cannot see the result. Also, if i try to copy down the formula, the variable (cell ref) remains constant instead of changing appropriately (relative).
There must be a radio button, or variable that is opposite to the old excel that i am not able to find. "Help" does not help.
How do i make the result of a formula display in the current cell?

Are you refering to Tools | Options | View | Window options | Formulas check box?

Check to make sure that the cell format isn't text...

I'd have to agree with melone. If the cell references aren't changing, the entries migh be text-formatted

Or you forgot the = sign in front of the formula. According to Excel, typing "2+2" shows "2+2", while typing "+2+2" or "=2+2" will show you "4".

I don't know what's at the above link. But I agree with the previous posts. Check to see your options are set up to display results (vs formula's) as suggested by IRStuff.
