Has anyone seen this before .

We have a project where all the joists are going to be free hand sprayed with fire proofing 2" thick .
So instead of having 4" wide bar joists I now have 8" wide barjoists at the bottom . And with these heads being Extended coverage heads the 4Xs rule is really testing my patience .
(I need to be 32" to clear the obstruction) . I just can't get the heads spaced correctly . And these heads were specifically spec'd for this job by owner .

Thanks .

How deep are the joists?

Most of them are 24" deep joists .

Not a designer or engineer

But does 8.8.5.2.1.6 nfpa 13 2010 edition help you?

Remember the 32" is measured diagonally. That may help. What is your joist spacing?

I have had situations like you describe and it was a nightmare.

cdafd ,

Unfortunately 8.8.5.2.1.6 nfpa 13 2010 doesn't help me either . The width of the bar joists will most likely be over 8" when the fire proofing is
applied .

Travis ,

I am trying to keep them 32" on the diagonal , I have requested that the strip lighing be lowered to be at least 36" below my heads so then
I should hopefully be able to meet the 32" distance and not have to worry about the lights . But this is still proving to be a tough one too .
Joists are spaced 6'-3½" typically .

thanks .

I assume these are the EC-25 heads. Can you be centered between joists in every other channel. You would then be 12-7 on center. That would get you almost 38" from the center of the head to the center of the joists.
