a good list. Assuming that the list is not in order of preference (best to whatever) if one had to chose 1 or 2 books which one is recommended? For example I have a copy of 'The finite element method by O.C. Zienkiewicz and R.L. Taylor 1.Volume 1 The Basis' and I am glad I didn't buy it
No sure that such recommendation is even possible! But I know that in Category 2 I prefer #2 over #3 (I have both)

Well I think such an recommendation is not possible because it depends what one expects from a book
The Zienkiewicz book is a classical book that every student in my time ( long time ago ) had to have......

The list is not in order of recommendation. And yes as klaus said it is not possible to give recommendation without knowing(and sometimes knowingly) what one is looking for.

For example, #6 in Category 2 is specialized book for shell problems and deal with shell theory. The book aims to give thorough discussion on mathematical models and discretization techniques.

I would prefer #1 and #2 than #3 for their simplicity in writing, organization and readability of the book. I would look in to the Zienkiewicz(He published first edition of this book in 1967 and it remained the only book on subject until 1971-from Authors short profile in book) for his approach, if I am not bored already.
