Does anyone know the details of why 45 degree diagonal measurement lines are required for test sections less than 25 feet wide under ASTM E1155 ?

Long linear measurements are necessary to achieve statistical reliability. If the available length is shorter than necessary, the alternate is to test at 45 degrees to achieve a longer length for reliability.

So, if a 80'x110' building had column lines and control joints on a 20' x 21.5' grid, resulting in 20 test sections of only 400+ sq.ft. each, would it be better to make the test sections boundaries at every other column line so that most sections are roughly 40'x40' at 1600 sq.ft. ? Then most sections would be greater than 25' wide, but the number of sections (for pass/fail evalation) would be reduced from 20 to either 4 or 6. Thoughts or recommendations anyone?
