Extracting a new Part from a Trimmed Part

Greetings.

I have a tough question. I have a surface (surface 1), and I have a cylinder (surface 2-WAVE Linked) going through the surface.

I want to trim surface 1 to surface surface 2, and I want to extract the resulting surface as a new part.

Can this be done?

If that is hard to understand, let me put it another way.

I have a flat sheet of cookie dough (part 1). I have a cookie cutter (part 2). Both of these parts are in an assembly.

I am going to use the cookie cutter to create a cookie (part 3) from the flat sheet of cookie dough.

Is there a way to save my new "cookie" as a new, linked part by virtue of my cookie cutter and dough?

Does this make sense?

I am not sure if this will work with parts that have be linked with WAVE. You should be able to go to FILE->EXPORT->PART. There are several different options in this dialog box like "link to original" and "remove parameters" and others. You might have to experiment with those but you should be able to select the objects you want to export and go from there. This is all based on V18 on a PC. It should be very similar in UNIX.
