I have created a storm sewer drainage network using HydroCAD. I have exported the data table for my reach analysis and everything looks good, but I am missing one piece of information. The missing information is the relationship between my time of concentration and Rainfall intensity as water moves through the network. This relationship shows the increasing of the Time of concentration and the decreasing of the rainfall intensity as storm water moves through the network. Is this information really needed? If yes or no, why? Thank you in advance!

This is the response I received from Peter Smart from HydroCAD, below.

The Tc and intensity values only apply to the subcatchments, so they are included only in the subcatchment export table.

HydroCAD does not utilize the Tc or intensity with other nodes, which are evaluated using the appropriate hydrograph routing operation. This is one of the primary reasons to use HydroCAD - because it offers more advanced routing procedures which cannot be performed with a spreadsheet.

When using HdyroCAD, the effect of travel time is incorporated by a separate hydrograph routing for each node. When using the Rational method, the "worst case" rainfall duration at any point in the model can be evaluated by using the critical duration report as discussed at This procedure is able to handle complex conveyance and detention systems where adding a linear travel time is not possible.

Thank you Peter. I have shared your response with my senior engineers and they agree with your explanation. This is exciting news. I was the one who pushed for the use of HydroCAD in our office and I am about to complete my first project while using your software through the entirety of the project. Thank you again!
