We moved into a new laboratory building last year and have identified some areas that need improving. Our sample preparation and PSD areas need some form of dust extraction and we have difficulty in maintaining a consistant temperature in our consolidation room. I was wondering what experiences other members might have had with dust extraction or air conditioning systems that may help us come up with a solution.

Your new building was presumably not designed with housing a lab, very often the case. You have to do some retrofitting. Hoods , vents , fans have all to be used to extract dust. These days you just cannot spew dust in the atmosphere especially if you are closeby to other facilities. You need to develop a plan. PSD device can be housed in a cabinet and this vented.

You need to have some ideas, call in a renovator/ carpenter and discuss as a first step. If the building is not yours then discussing with the owners is necessary as well, and understanding the permitting rules and regulations.

Some of the above may drop out depending on your particular circumstances. Generally, much depends on your vision for now and the future.
