Embed Stud Plate

Hello all,

I'm reviewing an embed plate/shear tab connection that is commonly used for tilt-up buildings. I have a pretty big beam bolted to a WT, welded to a 3/4" x 27" x 3'-4" embed with (16) nelson studs. See the detail attached.

I'm looking more at the embed itself. It's calculated and detailed so that concrete failure is not an issue. So now I'm looking at the steel. I want to know if there's a way to reduce the size of the plate. Perhaps I could weld an angle through the back to help engage the concrete? Flat plate headed studs? Not sure.

Thoughts?

In my opinion, that type connection is too rigid for big beams on precast walls. There have been many instances of cracking due to beam rotation.
 
I agree wholeheartedly with hokie66: don't connect this beam the way it is shown, for fear of moment prying on the plate and anchors. Put a beam seat under it so it can rotate adequately.

Agree with the other comments. Another option is using a welded bolted double angle here? Angle legs will flex at the embed to allow the end rotation.
