Electrostatic generator 2

I wish to genetate an electrostatic charge of a few kV across a metal plates about 4" square for an expirament. I need to maintain charge for a few hours in normal room conditions.

So far I havnt found any instruments apart from a Van de Graaff generator or similar mechanical systems to do this. Know where I could get an electrical device to do what I need?

Are you trying to conserve charge, or maintain potential difference? One requires very high levels of insulation, while the other needs a source of power.
 
I wish to maintain the potential difference so theoretically there should be no current once the device is charged. However I assume there will be some leakage of potential through ths air or through insulators. How much I cannot say at the moment but given that the appartus should be reasonably dry I would guess to be minimal.

Also I wouls like to power electrostatic generator from AC mains supply or 24 DC PSU.

Several kilovolts is within range for a fairly simple voltage multiplier. Start with AC, use a transformer to achieve several hundreds of volts, and then the voltage multiplier to make several thousand volts DC.

Or just buy a module.

Keep an eye on eBay. Some Glassman stuff goes for bargain prices because it is minority interest. It takes away the difficulties of a roll-your-own design.
 
At the hundreds to thousands of volts level, parasitic leakage will kill performance, and that's one lesson, while interesting, is not necessarily desirable to learn, particularly if someone else has already learned them and are building working product.
