Hi, I am about to start my 3rd year at university studying Electronic & Electrical Engineering. I find both sides equally interesting & rewarding. I am currently registered to study Electrical Engineering more, but I am unsure which side will:

A - Be easier to find a job in industry doing (Considering how many other graduates there will be out there.

B - Be more rewarding in a day to day job.

I realise this website is aimed more at solving physical problems with circuits etc. But since people on this website will have first hand experience in working as an engineer, I thought that your opinions on my situation would be very valuable. It would be much appreciated if you could find the time to reply to this post, as I only have a few months to make an important decision in my future career as an engineer.

To sum up, I would just be interested to find out your opinions on job availability in the industry and also whether you prefer Electronic/Electrical and why.

Thank you again. Richard

You should actually have posted in one of the "soft" forums like forum731 where you'll find many similar questions.

However, you should consider these points:

> You can't generally make a career out of something you don't like

> You cannot generally excel at a vocation that you don't like

You should focus more on what your passion is and not worry so much about future jobs, since no one here, or anywhere, has a sufficiently functional and accurate crystal ball. If it's something you like and excel at, you can more easily find a job, since many interviewers do consider and sense enthusiasm and passion. Moreover, if it's something you like, you will be more immersed in your pursuits, and you could create your own job, if you can't find one, i.e., be a consultant, or start your own business.

Which side do you find more interesting? That's a good clue.

I break it down to which side of the power supply do you like to work on?

Electronics is on the secondary side and will continue growing, although a lot of the design is moving to third-world countries.

Electrical engineering is the primary side, and there seems to be lots of new interesting mains work withe 'green' power boom that is going on around the world.
