Are there any standards or requirements that dictate how a steel motor base/platform should be designed? ie. Should it be completely rigid or is some flexibility required for start-up torque? Are there mass requirements? etc.

I want to modify a steel structure designed for a 2.2MW motor so a 2.9MW will fit onto it. The structure needs to be lowered and also widened to fit the new motor. I am looking for the simplest/qucickest mod as this will only be carried out in the event of existing (2.2MW) motor failure.

Belt drive?
What is the vibration like now? Lots of motor and belt 1X and 2x vibration? A flexible but non-resonant base (as is pretty common on car alternator mounts these days) is quieter and a little gentler on bearings, but must result in mechanically induced vibration, which is probably means the poor vibration analysts have some 'splaining to do.

There are plenty of commerical bases that manage to end up close to resonance. It would be a shame to duplicate a bad one.

My preference is a base with direct load paths from motor feet to ground, and a few small flexibelts on big diameter sheaves.
 
I guess 2 plus mW is probably not belt drive.
 
That's correct, it is direct coupled to a 4 stage integrally geared compressor.
