I'm caught up on a material for a latching configuration.
I've been hours on Matweb and the best I can come up with is a 304/L - 60% elongation @ yeild - Youngs @ 28000 ksi.
Am I on the right track.
I need a 1/4" deflection with as little as possible deformation. 1 cycle.[the configuration is much like a backpack clip]
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve Scott

You are quite mistaken regarding 304L stainless steel - it has nothing near 60 % elongation at yield. The elastic strain at yield would be miniscule - something like 0.002 (i.e. 0.2 %).

If you need high elastic deflection without plastic deformation, you need a spring material. Spring temper stainless steel like 301 or 302 are good (but expensive). Maybe you can consider a carbon steel: music wire, hard drawn, Cr-V, Cr-Si, etc.

Thank you,

I should learn to completely read what is presented to me, not just what is highlited. The datasheet I was reading from was "Crucible Steel 304L Chromium-Nickel Steel".
I just smacked myself in the side of the head, I had it coming.

Would you know, off hand, a material designation for the materials you suggested.

Steve

Here are a few:

ASTM A 288
ASTM A 277
ASTM A 679
ASTM A 229
ASTM A 230

Cory,

Thank you so very much!!!
This has been an awakening for me to be more careful and review rather than rush.

Once again, THANKS!

Steve
