Edit Sketch in 2008

Hello all,
We recently upgraded to SW2008, had no reason to do it earlier, and now our users are complaining that editing a sketch takes much longer than in 2007. I have compared the two and there definitely is a difference. My question is this, is the delay in 2008 when double clicking on a dimension in order to edit it normal? I know that in 2007 double clicking on a dimension instantly brought up the modify dimension box.

Is there a setting somewhere that needs to turned on or off, or is 2008 just generally slower?

I don't see a delay myself. '08 has, for the most part, been faster.

What are the system specs? Did you make sure your graphics cards were approved, along with the drivers? When you did your upgrade, how did you do it (clean install vs. update original install)?

Thank you for the quick response Jeff.
We upgraded this past weekend. Our upgrade was a new install through an admin image. We still have 2007 on our machines and probably will for a few more days. Our systems are a few years old, but still reasonably good with the exception of the graphics card. We have 3.40 GHz P4's with 4 GB of ram and the 3 GB switch enabled. The video card is an FX1300 with the latest approved drivers. I realize that the video card in not approved for 2008, but it works ok, we just don't have the real view graphics anymore. Also we are still on XP Pro sp 2.

Any idea on how I can improve our lag in edit times?

I wish we could get new machines in here, but with so many changes in our organization it has been put aside for the time being.

XP pro is still recommended, though Vista is gaining ground from what I understand.
The lag you're talking about is how long? Is this when strictly editing the sketch, or when you double click on the solid and modify the dimension there?

Beg, borrow or buy an approved graphics card and try it in one machine. You will notice a difference.

Were the '07 files converted to '08 before opening in '08?

On one machine, try doing a completely clean install (no previous versions) of SW08.

I'm still running a P4-2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, nVidia Quadro FX500 card and see no latency while working in sketches.

The lag is between 3 to 7 seconds and it's in both instances, editing the sketch or double clicking the solid. It is weird, on my machine it is 3 seconds on other users it is over 5 but below 8 seconds. All of our machines are the same; expect for the amount of accumulated junk I'm sure.

In either case is, it is definitely slower than 2007.

I just might have to do that, if the users complain loud enough. If it was up to me I'd just get new hot dog machines. As for updating our files, we never update the files. They get updated on an as needed basis. I don't believe that would have much of an impact, other actually opening the files.

Just a thought. Does skipping service pack have a negative affect on the installations? We went straight to SP 4 on 2008.

As for updating our files, we never update the files. They get updated on an as needed basis.

The trouble with that is when the "as needed" basis happens several versions apart. The older the version the more likely problems will occur during the conversion process.

Did you uninstall the old graphics driver and reboot before installing the new driver?

Are you using MS Intellipoint mouse driver? If so try switching to a Logitech mouse, or at the very least, update to the latest MS Intellipoint package.

Do you have the Desktop Search and Indexing enabled?

Skipping SP's shouldn't have an adverse effect.

Hi all
Try to turning off <Instant 3D>, it placed in the features toolbar its like a ruler with Arrow on it!, in Ver2007 with duble click you can change all Dim's and then you must click to Rebulid tab to make the changes effect ["I know that in 2007 double clicking on a dimension instantly brought up the modify dimension box" not correct], in 2008 the <3d instans> tab is added to feature toolbar and its job is very easy and functional, when this tab switched to ON mode by one click(Estead Duble click in 2007) you can drag any corners of your parts, or you enablid by make this changes by entering in the simple box (On this box you see only a empty place to entering you new dimensions), try to familiarize with this new conditions,its easy to work and very useful to make quick changes in your designed parts, but if you cant, simply switch this tab to off mode.by this you can work with parts like 2007 version.
be certain that the new versions are more powerfull and quick.
