BACKGROUND: I am enhancing a proprietary moldless casting machine that centrifugally casts a near-perfect coating on a curved surface. The degree of perfection inversely depends on the variation in angular velocity. A servo motor drives the unit through a 100-to-1 gear speed reducer.
PROBLEM: Backlash in the gearing prevents the servo drive from maintaining a constant angular velocity.
PROPOSED SOLUTION: Provide a relatively small amount of parasitic torque in the form of a brake such that backlash is eliminated in the gearing.
NEW PROBLEM: After trying several styles of strap brakes, I've eliminated brake squeal by using a 3-1/2" 410 SS disc brake and a bicycle caliper. The current problem is DUST - this contaminates the surface of my cast workpiece. I've tried several commercial forms of disc pad compounds including Ceramic-Carbon Sintered pads which I incorrectly believed was dust free.
SOLUTION NEEDED: What type of brake pad material will emit the minimum of dust? And just as importantly, where do I get this material? I've tried the pads available from the caliper manufacture and they are VERY dusty.
