What does "Dual Certified" mean? Why is commonly asked for Stainless Steel materials?

Thanks to anyone in advance.

Dual certified means that it meets two different compositions such as 304 / 304L.

Commonly done to get the low carbon of an L grade for improved weldability, I believe.

Regards,

Mike

Just to add to SnTMan's post, which is a very common reason to ask for 304/L materials:

Dual Certified material meets BOTH the physical requirements of straight grade materials, which allows the designer to use the higher of the two allowance stresses (and thus thinner and less expensive fabrications), AND the chemical requirements of L grade for improved weldability.
