I would like some advice on drawing template conventions:

1. What items do you typically link to the drawing?

2. What items are typically linked to the model?

Should I be pulling the rev off of the model or should I be setting it in the drawing file?

I would just like to do this correctly the first time.

Thanks

Tim

This heavily depends on your needs. Are you an individual, or setting up a system for a new company?

On dwgs: I usually link date, no of sheets and drawn by. On dwgs linked to model: title, material, sometimes weight, saved date. I do not link revs because it always conflicted with PDMWorks revs for most users.

Currently a single user but we will be adding another engineer soon. We are using PDMworks and I want to set it up for myself to use right now and not face any difficultys in the future when we add another designer.

Today I have it set up like this:

Linked to Model:
Title
Material
Weight

Linked to Drawing:
Drawn By
Drawn Date
Checked By
Checked Date
Approved By
Approved Date

I am unsure on the REV at this point where to link it to.

Tim,

Everything checked into PDMWorks will have the following properties added to it: Number, REV, Project, Author, and Status if you are using a revision scheme that warrants it.

I would also consider having a modelled by or engineered by on the model. You also might want to consider a finish applied to the model if you build things that have many different finish options. Then you can link the finish to the drawing when the model is placed in it.

Jon

I link to the model whatever information is important to recreate the drawing in case I lost it. Who did the drawing is not inportant so it is linked to the drawing but some of the notes might be important so they are linked to the model. I don't use PDM so I have revision linked to the drawing. You may have a second revision linked to the model but that should no show on the drawing and it should be just for your records.

My advice is to keep all the information on both drawing and model. This is actually what I've set up at my company.

It's easy enough with PDMWorks to keep all the same information on both the drawing and model. The PDMWorks check-in screen allows the user to simply highlight a column and apply a single values to all fields in that column.
