I have no experience with AutoCAD, but have read repeatedly that DS is effectively a clone of older 2D ACAD. I've run through (some of) the tutorial material on the DS site, but would like to find a book to work through. I've only located a couple of DS books ($$!), but of course lots of older-version ACAD books online, some very cheap.

Is DS close enough to ACAD to enable learning (much of) it from an older ACAD book?

If so, what's the 'nearest match', ACAD version-wise? 2005? 2007? 2010 LT?

Thanks!

I think DS is close enough to AutoCAD to enable learning from the AutoCAD books. However, DS has some different command names. If you understand what it is you're trying to accomplish, you can get there.

I skipped from AutoCAD 2004 to 2007 briefly then to 2010. DS seems more like 2004, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the info!

We have (for the moment at least) a subscription to Books 24x7 at work, so I've spent a little time comparing online ACAD books to what I see in DS. As you mentioned, in some cases the names have been changed to protect the innocent :-) but they're very similar. In fact for the most part the primary menus of DS and ACAD 2005/2007 are virtually idential other than order. I'll keep looking, though.

Thanks again.
