I was not able to solve the subject problem even after reading thread1480-305461 so I kept looking. On a DraftSight blog I found a post(#680)by Christina Lefebvre entitled "Troubleshooting Tool: Graphics test". While attempting to follow Christina's advice regarding disabling the hardware adapter I noticed that the "Color Depth" on my machine was set to 16 bit. Changing it to 32 bit solved the problem!
