When I select a dim line and shorten it, it always leaves a little dot at the end of the line about 1/4" from the end of the regular line itself. I've tried everything but cannot get rid of it!

Nope, it defines "where" you are taking the dimension from. Try editing the "dim line offset" parameter for the dimension. Also, you can build your own dimension/extension lines, then take dimensions from the endpoints of the extension/dimension lines.

Thanks. I just remembered I can extend a line over the extension line. Thanks

The dot is on layer defpoints and will not show in output. You can only get rid of them when the dimension object is exploded (which you don't want to do). Like btrueblood says, you can change the dim style parameter or system variable to shorten or eliminate the gap and still have associative dimensions..
