Do the B31.1 and B31.3 committees talk?

Do the B31.1 and B31.3 piping code committees talk to each other?

When one of these codes comes up with a good idea the other does not seem to pick it up.

Example.

B31.3 requires corrosion to considered when calculating sustained loads. B31.1 does not. (be aware of corroded B31.1 pipe. It may not burst but it could fall on you)

B31.3 required you to look at the sustained loads in all operating cases, B31.1 does not. (This is very important when you get support lift off when a line heats up)

They talk occasionally, but I suspect is not often about code contents.

All the codes do not prescribe what might be required in every design case, nor could they. Codes only prescribe what would be minimally acceptable for an average system. Engineers determine what is ultimately necessary in a given system. They are the responsible party, not the codes.

Sometimes I feel need a corrosion allowance. Sometimes I do not feel that I need any corrosion allowance at all. If I need a corrosion allowance, I use it even if the given code does not say I need it. If loads are critical, I provide corrosion allowance in addition to what is required to sustain the load.

We know our geothermal pipelines have even surface corrosion so we always use corroded thickness in the calculations even though B31.1 does not require it.

There are many people from around the world that participate in ASME Code Committee meetings. The last meeting that I was in had participants from: USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Australia. And that's the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code that meets four times a year. Piping Code only meets once a year.

B31, B1.1, ad B31.3 also have international representatives from Dubai and China, while there is a B31.3 International Review Group with representatives from: Netherlands, UK, India, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, France, Malaysia, [red]New Zealand[/red], Ireland, Germany, Iran, Norway and Abu Dhabi.
