Hello,
As Per QW 423.1 When a base metal shown in the left column is used for welder qualification, the welder is qualified to weld all combinations of base metals shown in the right column, including unassigned metals of similar chemical composition to these metals.
Does it mean any combination like, if base metal in welder qualification is P1-P1 GTAW+SMAW with or without backing with F.no 6 & 5 then he is qualified to weld P1-P8 GTAW+SMAW with or without backing with F.no 6 & 5 ?

Correct. Just make sure you put "optional" under the gas backing for GTAW. Then you can add a purge later for stainless GTAW if required.

I am presuming you are meaning backing gas (inert gas) and not backing material ?
If you qualified with backing gas you cannot weld in production without backing gas (eg. P1 would need to be purged)
If you welded P1 with F6 & 4 (C/S) without purge then as David stated you would put "optional" for gas backing so you can add it for stainless if required.
However, if you welded P1 with F6 & 5 (S/S) with gas backing then you would need to put "required" for gas backing.
Regards,
Shane

I believe the OP was referring to backing material...I just added the gas as an FYI.

David,
Without the OP's response we will never know.
However, it seems a bit strange.
SMAW/FCAW, SMAW/GMAW, GMAW/FCAW - you could understand the use of backing material but why would you use backing material with a GTAW root run ?
Cheers,
Shane

True enough.....and I am prone to misunderstanding!! I just assumed the performance testing was done on open root, resulting in being qualified with or without backing for the GTAW.

David/DekDee,
P1-P1 GTAW+SMAW with or without backing with F.no 6 & 5 (i.e. test coupon P1-P1 was welded without backing gas for root during welder qualification test so welder is qualified for with or without backing gas). so can this qualification be used for P1-P8 with backing gas ( F no's remain same )?

Yes.
However, just curious.
Was the GTAW filler material stainless steel or carbon steel ?
If stainless steel was used was there no backing gas on the welder qualification ?

GTAW filler material was carbon steel (ER 70 S-2 ). But for production weld we have to use P1-P8 with ER309L+E309L with backing gas.
Thanks,

You said in your OP you welded the SMAW with F5 (stainless steel) but the GTAW was carbon steel ?
Is that correct ?
