Please see the attached moment frame elevation. ASCE 7-05 Paragraph 12.2.5.5 requires that a special moment frame be CONTINUOUS to the foundation. Does this frame meet the requirement, even though several beams at Level 3 will be simply-supported gravity beams?
In case you're wondering why anyone would ever design a frame like this: We have a 2-story space which precludes the use of SMF detailing along the 4 interior bays at Level 3, and we have to meet AT/FP alternate path requirements.
I'm inclined to think the frame is continuous, albeit with three double-high columns at the interior. Any thoughts?
