hello . I am looking to replicate in machinable resin, a fine grooved metal surface . Surface structure has repeat features of around 30 microns or so. I normally get this done by creating a silicone mould of the metal then casting a resin into the silicone mould. Is there a direct way of casting with a resin that a) reproduces the fine detail and a) requires only a very thin layer of release agent(or none at all if possible) . I would want to avoid the resin sticking to the metal such that it cant be easily removed! Any details of suitable materials and release agent would be appreciated as would any other comments. Many thanks in advance, Opticsman

If you can make a rigid mould or support a rubber mould in a rigid container, you can use some pressure to pack the mould and more accurately reproduce the surface.

Conformation to the mould surface vs distortion of the surface is the compromise and is very mould construction dependant.

Many years ago I recall using a two part (epoxy?) resin to replicate surface finish (of metals) to allow measurement in otherwise inacessible (by the measuring machine) places. I do not recall any release agents being used either.

At the time we were using surface measurement equipment made by Taylor Hobson ("Talysurf"). I would guess any surface measurement equipment manufacturer would supply it if it is still used.

Also perhaps some dental casting resins may work?

Sorry for lack of details - brain filled up long time ago!
