Can someone please explain to me the difference between the Field Orientated Control (FOC) and Sensorless Vector control modes used in VFD's? I'm trying to understand from a theoretical standpoint what the difference between these two control modes are.

Is there advantages or disadvantages to using one control mode as opposed to the other? Do certain modes work better for certain applications?

If anyone has any place or reference where I could find information on FOC control I'd really appreciate it.

The term FOC will be a proprietary term from a specific company but the essence of jraef's FAQ is the same.
