Hello all,

I wonder what's the difference between using the hole feature or the cosmetic feature to create threads.

First I used cosmetic because I didn't know how to get rid of the 3D notes of the hole feature, but now that I can delete them (tools > environment > 3D notes ) I don't see the point ...

Both can repeat themselves with patterns too ... so ... what's the point ?

Thank you

the point is up to you.
Anyway, creat a hole with real cut threat is easy to visualize, but make the model unnecessarily complicated.
Cosmetic thread is easier.

The thread is the same but sometimes you need to add a thread to other features than holes.
When you need an external thread use cosmetic or if you cut the hole with revolve.
Other wise the hole feature is more powerful and adds the cosmetic by choice

Cosmetic is the old version of Proe. Till 2000i (1999) it was the only way!

In 2000i2, 2001 PTC introduced the wizard for the holes. What Ankarl says is right! Holes has some limitation. I.e.: if you make a pattern of athreaded hole you can't redefine e hole to make it simple (unless you unpattern and redefine).

To make a hole I prefer (when possible) to make a revolution cut and then tomake a cometic. When you are designing you need the max flexibility!!!

Especially with WF3, because PTC has introduced again the plane "on the fly" embedded in the feature (like it was until 2001).

I hope this answer is enough...

The hole feature with thread does not properly trim the thread surface if it breaks through into a non-planer surface. I prefer the old way of creating revolved cuts and cosmetic threads. Maybe a little slower initially but significantly more flexible.

Actually, the threaded hole feature is a combination of old styled cosmetic thread + hole. Sometimes we need to make non standard holes or bores with thread, or with threaded portion. for these porposes we can use hole then make cosmetic thread. Bcoz in hole feature, u cant make non standard threaded holes. Otherwise there is no difference, just u can manage model tree better or make little features.
