Difference between *.dmt and *.map

I want to modify colors assignment options to add some more colors.
At present I have appearance.dmt file already set.
I have got another file named colors.map.
Can I replace .dmt file with .map file with same name?
Do I need to change any config option?
Does appearance.dmt file contains any other info. than color??
