Just purchased a diesel generator... The owners manual said nothing about filling the injector and governor with oil until the scheduled maintenance section... Then it only mentioned when to do it, not how. I found a vented screw cap to remove on the governor, but I don't know what kind and how much oil to put in. I suspect it uses the same oil as the crankcase. Any ideas or information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi there... to answer your question I'll need a little more info because of the various manufactures ALL do things different, and the consequenses if you put to much ...or inversley none at all.<br>

As to what kind of oil.. generally injection pumps uses the same oil as the engine ... the style of pump and size (No of cylinders) denotes the quantity...<br>
To much oil can hurt right? ... wrong especially for gensets to much oil may affect the governors ability to react in a timely manner; conversley to little may (in older pump - nonengine lubrication feed) may become diluted by diesel fuel leaking past the pumping element thus causing a lubrication problem in itself.<br>

Thanks for your exellent help so far... Anyway, the engine is a "Changchai Model 295D" diesel engine. It's a 2 cylinder, and the label on the injector is all in "Chinese". It's supposed to be based on a German design, but built in China.<br>

I already tried some things out... I noticed a vent tube on the injector, and a breather on the governor. I blew some air through the vent tube and heard it coming out of the governor's breather... "They must be connected inside!"... I then proceeded to add oil to the governor until it leaked out of the injector. This took about 8 oz of oil. I started it up, and except for a very slightly lower RPM, it ran great. I kept a can under the vent tube to collect anything else that ran out. It seems that about 4 oz of the oil ran out over time, and the RPMs are back to normal. It's still running great, so if this sounds like the right amount or technique, let me know. Based on your first advice, it seems like it's hard to add too much oil. Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your on to a winner, the injection pump is based on an old system, what I mean by that is that the injection pump has it's own oil level independent to that of the engine.<br>
As you duely noted you "cant" really go wrong as the excess oil is blead off, just remember to periodically change the oil in the pump, as I meantioned before the old stlye of pump inevitably filled with diesel fuel that leaks past the plunger elements and due raises the oil level, thus pushing the oil out the overflow.
