Hello all, my name is Paul this is my fist time on the forum. I have a question about the design of a chain link. Here at our company we produce kiln chain, a heat transfer medium for concrete kilns. We have been looking for different ways to produce the chain rather than our conventional methods, and one way we came up with was using open end chain links with an open end aproximatly 1 in , linking them to closed links, pressing the open link to form the ring with a 3 in inner dia. and butt welding it to close the gap. The problem I have is, what would the dimensions of the open chain be, if I were to press the ends together to weld it and have it retain an inside diameter of 3 in. We use steel rod .375in dia. I imagine that the ring would have an eliptical shape before it was to be pressed together for welding to create a ring with 3in inner dia. if any one could help me out it would be much appreciated if you need more info just ask.
