Density of Asphalt Concrete

I'm calculating tonnage for 2" Asphalt Concrete overlay. What's the density I use for calculations. Is it 110 lb/cu.yd?

Depends upon the mix properties and compaction criterion. I commonly use between 2250 kg/m3 (140 lb/ft3) and 2350 kg/m3 (147 lb/ft3) for in-place density (conventional ACP mix) in my neck of the woods. Here we are dealing agg spec gravs of 2.68 for crush product and around 2.60 for natural fines. Oil content is commonly around 6.0% by dry wt. of agg. The 110 lb/ft3 value seams quite low, at least in my experience.

It is common practise with GDOT engineers to use 110Lbs/SY, which is approximately 146PCF.

2330 kg/cubic metre is also used for mixes with predominanly gravel aggregate. One of the things one has to watch is that one does not come up short on the tonnage nor too much. Both may have contractual considerations. Do not forget entrances to roadways and farms and the requirements of local authorities. The former apply if you are undertaking highway related paving projects. Remember as well that despite the best estimates, one has to watch the Contractor if he is being paid by the tonne as some like to increase the thickness and this can affect your quantities as well. Just some pointers since if one comes up short then everyone looks at you for the answers.

I believe the smart Southerner from Georgia has clarified your estimating needs. As a common rule of thumb, most suppliers figure that it takes between 105 - 110 pounds of mix to install 1" over one square yard. Depends on a lot of factors - lower in-place compaction levels will obviously make a ton of mix go a little farther. That's how a lot of mom & pop pavers can make a little extra cash on a job that is bid on a per square yard basis!!

Best bet is to contact one or two local suppliers and ask for a copy of the mix design they are currently running.

Here in LA. we use 115lb./ Square Yard/ per inch. In your case that would be 230lb/Square Yd.

I agree with roncity. The asphalt producer (not necessarily the contractor) will have most likely run their own Rice density, on the material you tested, which will give you the exact number you're looking for. If you have a copy of the delivery ticket, the producer's phone number should be right on there. It should be fine for you just to call dispatch with the date and truck information. I used to do this on a daily basis, and they are always glad to track it down.
