Definition of North Elevation

Can someone tell me where I might find the exact definition of an elevation? Such as "Facing the side that faces south you are at the North Elevation".
I could use a document stating this.

A North elevation is the one facing North. ie. as seen from the North.

North is usually "project north", which may or may not be true north. "Project north" should be defined on the drawings. Always was on the HVAC plans I worked with.
