Hi

What's the range of intermediate sections?

I found in FEMA that the sections smaller than W21 are shallow, but what's the start point of Deep sections?

Is W24 Deep section or intermediate?

Thanks

I am not aware of any strictly defined range of steel beam depths. I suppose we could agree that below W14 is shallow, W16 to W24 is perhaps intermediate and above W24 is deep, but there is no defined line between these categories.

How would such a definition influence your approach to design and what is the purpose of your question?

I would think deep would be determined more from span to depth ratio.

Yeah, the only time I'd use the term 'deep beam' is when the span to depth ratio becomes small enough that it stops behaving fully in beam action.
