Declaring a building off-limits

I have to go look at a building that a drunk apparently tried to turn into a drive thru. One thing I'm wondering is: if I see something that makes me think the thing is about to cave in.....should I just declare (then and there) that no one from that point on should enter unless they are a contractor? (Or even if they are a contractor. If it is unsafe to enter (i.e. there is a chance of collapse).....how can anyone work on it (at least from the inside)?)

Get the local fire chief to do it. That's their job.

I think the oldest guy is correct on calling the fire chief.

If you do think the structure is near collapse, then I would also make sure I sent the client an email strongly recommending no one enter the site until it is shored up. You could also recommend temporary signs be placed warning people off in the email. (it's nice to have written documentation of these things in case something bad happens)

In Charleston, SC, it is common for historic buildings to be too dangerous to work on. As oldestguy suggests, work with government officials to help them make the right decision. Here is a newspaper article on a recent situation.

Yes....local authority. Building Official usually prevails on structural issues.
