Day Tank Sizing

I'm sizing a diesel day tank for a dual fuel gas turbine to be located offshore. I would really appreciate advice on the following:

1. What is the purpose of the day tank?
2. Does the day tank have to located local to the turbine?
3. Does the tank need to be sized for one days diesel consumption. This would mean a 60 m3 tank for me.

You might get more informed answers in one of the marine forums or in the offshore forum of petroleum engineers.

I am not sure of the need for a day tank for diesel so I'll be interested in the answers you get.
I could guess it is to enable the flow and return to a reasonable location and you may not want to store all your fuel near the engines. But it will be nice to have the real answer.

1. The Day Tank serves as a surge of fuel for start up and running during the loss of the diesel supply pumps. The time is project specific. Look at your basis for design.

2. The day tank is meant to gravity feed the fuel to the turbine diesel feed pump. In must be close, or at least above.
