I have a test plate welded in the 1G position, it is a 1" A36 test plate with a 45 degree bevel and 1/4" backing. I am performing two side bends, does the backing need to be removed? My test sample is prepared in accordance to Figure 4.13 and the test jig was built in conformance to Figure 4.15.

The backing bar introduces additional stress risers that can initiate cracks when performing the side bend. Generally the backing bar is removed and ground flush with the welded plate.

The question becomes, "how important is it that the test bends pass without corner cracking?"

Best regards - Al

I also have a question related to bend test.

Where does AWS specify whether longitudinal or transverse bend test is required.

Thanks

Andy

Longitudinals are used when dissimilar metals are welded together. Clause 4.9.3.2 (2010 edition)
