A customer has submitted numerous drawings where ASME Y14.5M-1994 is referenced. They use the Ø symbol for a cylindrical tolerance where a plane feature being controlled. I would like to know if the Ø symbol appropriate. Example:
Perpendicular | Ø .005 |A

Datum A is a cylindrical feature, but the feature being controlled is a plane surface.

Thanks,
Chuck

As described, the diameter symbol should indeed be omitted.

One should not use a diametrical tolerance zone on any feature that is not round or cylindrical. It should not be used on a plane or surface requirement.

Your example of perpendicularity with a diametrical tolerance zone is appropriate if the feature is a round hole or pin. If the feature is not round, it shouldn't be used since one would lose orientation.

I would suggest contacting your Customer and ask a few questions playing dumb. Try to get their requirement needs and then applying it to a marked up drawing.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was pretty sure, but wanted to have a second or third opinion before contacting our customer.
