I am trying to simulate the interaction between tho object in Abaqus. The simulation does not converge, I presume because there is a small gap between them. Unfortunately I cannot verify this by eye because the geometries are very complex. My question is, is it possible to insert an intermediate step (between the initial step and the load step) that will bring the two bodies in touch before the application of the load?

Yes, you can. In fact, introducing such a step with a displacement BC is a very common approach to avoid convergence issues.
