Crash of cargo ship into Gwangan Bridge in South Korean 5

Yes - I noticed that some slowed and saw what was coming and then zoomed ahead to get over the "collapse area".
There's some brave souls in Korea I guess.

But if things fell the boat would hold the girders up off the water I suppose!!!

Amazing to watch the traffic on the bridge not even slowing down. And you have to wonder exactly where the ship was headed. I mean it's obvious it was not in the channel and while you can see that they were in full reverse, they must have been moving along pretty quick if they were not able to stop in the distance that they had. I guess it could have been a failure in the steering mechanism.

Wow, the ship itself didn't even notice until they were about 2 ship lengths from the road; obviously, it takes more than 2 ship lengths to stop, unless you hit something ;-)

Ahh, just minor damage. That will buff out. [surprise]

Cell phone distraction again. Next it will be passenger jets.

I was right, IT WAS a "failure of the steering mechanism". In this case, the 'nut' holding the wheel.

It looks like it was leaning left all the way from port...

TBH I think they did a pretty good job slowing it down - they very nearly made it - the superstructure which collapsed was pretty flimsy - If one of those cranes had hit the bridge it would have been a lot different alright or if the bow hadn't just made it under the deck.

I like the way they thought they could just sail off into the sunset though

I don't think they put the brakes on until the little guy rushes back toward the bridge at 0:07.

Edit: ...and another guy running across the deck almost gets swatted with the mast at 0:35.

Edit Edit: The ship stops in less than half a length with a little help from the impact. It looks like it is unloaded based on the green line above the waterline.

Officials are also looking into why the vessel, Seagrand was in the waters near the £500 billion Gwangan Bridge - South Korea's second longest - when it should have been heading in the opposite direction.

According to the KCG, the Seagrand arrived in Busan around 9am on Wednesday morning to unload 1,495 tons of iron pipes.

According to local news agency Yonhap the Seagrand also hit a moored cruise ship just 40 minutes before the accident.

Agreed, Charlie... pretty surprised they were able to make that much steam and at that angle towards the bridge. They must have started right where that other ship is moored above Diamond Bay and put the pedal to the metal. Anyone want to take bets the cruise ship they hit was moored in that same location?

I am thinking some sort of "grand standing" show to the patrons and staff of a local establishment he frequented while on shore. "Watch as I swing by and blow the horn, Honey"

I think it is more likely that it was where the cargo ship was just above where it says view point and was tying to do a 200 degree turn to the right but at high speed.

I think if you look closely, the wake indicates that the ship was in reverse from the start of that particular video, as indicated by the churn in the wake on the sides of the stern.
