Crack found in Oakland Bay Bridge

It is my opinion that our politicians have no concept of what will be/is required to maintain the existing infrastructure.

As time goes by and things deteriorate to a state of closure it will only then become obvious to those in power the actual funding situation.

The article is quick to assert the crack has nothing to do with the ongoing works. But what I find in practice just by mere inspection of news is that almos always that a major structure fails, there were works in, under or besides.

With the failure of the retrofit of the Bay Bridge it would seem like the retrofit done in September was a major mistake.
How does a 5kip structural element fall from the sky.

Also, is the bridge experience local stress increases from fatigue, road realignment etc..

How about eliminating trucks on the bridge until Bridge completion?

I blame the whole mess on John V. Lindsay, who as Mayor of New York City, fired all the bridge painters to save money.

Questioned about the repercussions, he noted that the bridges were not currently falling down.

Guess what? Twenty years later, they started falling.

A man who spends his career painting the same bridge over and over is likely to notice a crack before it gets a year old. It's cheap insurance.

Mt Lindsay would appear to have as much foresight as most of your political and economic leaders over the last 40 years or so.

Saw the brooklyn bridge several years ago. I could not believe the state of it. Don't they realise that paint increases the life of bridges and saves money (and possibly lives) over time!

Bit like what good financial management does for a country.

John V Lindsay was Mayor during a difficult political period, not just in the US. Labour unrest was a problem also in UK and France for example. Apart from that there was a budget defecit problem that took several years to resolve. Whatever mistakes were made they were a long time ago and I'm sure someone could have thought of hiring painters during the last 30 years.

Yes, it was a tough time to be running a city. ... and I greatly admired Mr. Lindsay for a lot of things, but not for that one decision.

Unfortunately, Mr. Lindsay's leadership seemed to legitimize the idea of deferred maintenance other politicians. ... even after the West Side Highway fell.
