CPU maxing out when Solidworks is running

My CPU starts running at a minimun of 50% CPU usage whenever I open Solidworks (I've got an AMD dual-core processor; otherwise I think it would probably be at 100% CPU usage) and I can't figure out why.

This problem has been brought up before but there is no solution posted for it: (thread559-63740).

I've reinstalled Solidworks and repaired it (with anti-virus turned off) but it won't go away. I use an identical machine at work that behaved the same way, but it is behaving fine now (I've got no idea what I did to fix it).

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks for your help

What are some other system details--including the make of your hard drive and type of chips?

I just had a problem with mixing a Maxtor drive with a motherboard that uses nForce4 chips--apparently a Maxtor firmware problem. Not the same symptoms, but sometimes the cause of the problem can be very odd.

Reason trumps all. And awe trumps reason.

What other apps and/or processes are running?

Does this happen just when SW is open ... no models or drawings open?

Check your add-ins ... switch off everything you don't need.

Thanks for the replies - they lead me in the right direction to solving the problem.

The CPU usage went to 50% as soon as Solidworks was started, even with no drawing being open.

It turned out the Nvidia video card driver and Solidworks 3.0 just didn't work properly together. I installed the newest driver upgrade available from Nvidia and the problem was solved (at least until Solidworks is upgraded again:).

Now I'll know exatly where to start looking when it happens again.

What video card are using and what driver? I just got a new computer also and might have that problem. Haven't got to test it much as I have been busy setting all the stuff up. Thanks

I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT video card. The driver is the latest available from their website (ForceWare Release 80-Version: 81.98-Release Date: February 7, 2006).
